India stamped their authority on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, thanks to a record-breaking double century by captain Shubman Gill. Gill delivered a sensational knock of 269 runs, the highest individual score by an Indian in England, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s iconic 221 from 1979.
Resuming on Day 2 at a commanding position, India pushed their first innings total to a mammoth 587 all out, with strong contributions from Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42). Gill’s partnerships—203 runs with Jadeja and 144 with Sundar—laid the perfect platform for India to dominate the Test.
In response, England faltered early under pressure. By stumps on Day 2, they had slumped to 77 for 3, still trailing by 510 runs. Indian pacer Akash Deep struck twice in his opening spell, dismissing Ben Duckett for 0 and Ollie Pope for a golden duck. Mohammed Siraj also chipped in, removing Zak Crawley for 19.
India’s bowlers extracted swing and movement from the Edgbaston surface, unsettling England’s top order. With big names like Joe Root and Harry Brook still to come, the hosts have a daunting task ahead if they are to stay competitive in this Test.
As things stand, India are firmly in control and will look to press home the advantage on Day 3, while England must produce something special to avoid a humiliating defeat on home soil.
